I really don't have an opinion on this, but I can leave it or hide it from view. We'll give this "experiment in democracy" a couple of weeks to work.

I like karma. It's kind of like giving someone some applause, or even just a hug. If it's not misused, as in smiting people just because you don't like them, I think it's fun. I hope I don't get smited for this.

Hey, BL, been wandering around here trying to find something active. Where are all those little dealies I read about(spell check, smilies) what are the flames on the file folders, is there some kind of index to this thing? I don't handle change well, and I took care of a lot of needy, nutty people today. Plus we've been having spring tides down here and I can feel the pull. I'm ready for a sensory deprivation tank!

Hullo, Jay. Smilies you can put in your posts. You can import them, too, from places like emoticons4u.com/index.htm and www.pushupstairs.com/images/emoticon/eviewer.php. Let's see if I can explain how. Open a second browser, and then go to the emoticon site. Find the one you like, and click on it. Then you hit control C to copy it. Come back here in the other window, click on the little button above, the one with the picture on it (it will say "insert image" when you hold the mouse arrow over it), and then insert what you have copied between the brackets. Sometimes I am also able to import photos from the web by inserting the url between those "insert image" brackets. Other times, it doesn't work. Let's try:

I agree with booklady. As I said somewhere else, it may be silly, but it's not dopey, and it's kinda fun to be able to exalt people. As long as the smiting doesn't get mean-spirited and the folks with lower karma ratings don't start to feel hurt that others are way ahead, let's keep it, on the clear understanding that it's just for fun.

I didn't realize I was posting twice. I've got to be more careful. Could have deleted, but then you'd wonder what terrible thing I said.

Ah yes, the sign of a good preacher. S/he says everything twice! Just listen to Paul Wellstone or Martin Luther King. They repeat themselves.

About the karma/smite buttons. I plan to ignore them altogether. Remember all the hullaballoo over at the APHC Chatterbox? When folks would get all bent about other people's posts? Well, I counseled the Closed-Eyes approach then and I'll do it here. Take what works, ignore the rest.

Glad you liked my "preaching."
Now if I could figure out how to make the tags and smilies work.

Finding that I'd already achieved negative karma after just a couple of innocuous posts, I can't help advising that you drop that exalting/smiting option posthaste. Whoever thought it was fun to do that to me can congratulate him/herself.

Whoever thought it was fun to do that to me can congratulate him/herself. gailkate, I was at -2 karma myself, yesterday. I am assuming that it was because people are unaware of the functions of the various buttons on this board and are clicking on them indiscriminately. Although, given her new avatar, if Booklady finds herself being continuously smited, she can probably assume it is complements of a Yankees fan.

I rather thought jsp was jspnrvr of long standing.
I consider myself smitten.
Someone asked about all these extra goodies. If you click on the reply icon on the bottom blue bar you have a plethora of stuff to spend hours twiddling around with. If you simply click on the Quick Reply you are deprived of all those time-consuming niceties!
And thanks to others who have been advising on my simplicity in getting around such niceties, such as quoting others!
As to Karma, I have neither met her nor know anything about her, but it is such a pretty name don't you think?

Looking at the home page, I'm thinkin' it wouldn't be hard to run the table here (get my name as the last poster in every thread, so all you see are "booklady"s). ;D I think all I need is a Torture post and one or two others.....

OK, let's get this Karma thing straight. If I click on "Exalt" on someone's postings, does that mean they go up a notch? If I click on "Smite" do they lose a point? What happens if I click on my own posting? OK, this is being modified as I have just looked at it and notice I can't smite myself! I used to be a glutton for punishment. BTW, I assume I have to thank Trusty for making it 25 most recent posts available instead of 10. See! I notice these little things! Trusty! Award yourself some Karma points.

I like it. I think it could be fun. And anyone who doesn't like it doesn't have to use it, right?

Brit — I think you've got it. Except that since one cannot give karma points except by exalting the pointee, and the pointer cannot also be the pointee, if you want a karma point to go to Trusty, you'll have to find one of his posts and click on "Exalt."

No, Tillie, it's you who are smitten with (or by) me. I did it in a moment of lighthearted pique after reading the reference to VD.
But now that you've called me "sweet, sweet, sweet," I'm exalting you right back.
