Most of the deer appear to be does, no antlers, and she gets upset any time she sees a deer or a squirrel on our property. OK, that's her job, warn of any offenders on our property.
But the cattle don't bother her, or even interest her any more. They stay on their own side of the fence though, don't come onto our property. If Callie sees a deer over there in the cow pasture, she goes nuts - so she can tell the difference between a cow and a deer. The cows are black and white, and move slowly, maybe Callie takes note of that.

Callie and Johnny seem to have become not only BFF, but very attached.
Last week while on a walk with Howard, Callie pulled so hard on the leash that she broke free and ran away after some critter. After failing to lure her back, when Howard returned home with the leash but no Callie - Johnny got very upset. Howard says "He was inconsolable."
OTOH, both Johnny and Callie were napping on our bed and Johnny started to cough, like a hairball problem. Then Callie got all upset, went over to investigate, started howling so Howard would come over and check Johnny out.
Callie returned and Johnny was fine but we were surprised the dog and the cat are so attached to each other. We know they love us, but they care about each other too.
Mysterious - the world of animal emotions.

It's strange that the idea has arisen that dogs and cats are natural enemies. It all depends on the dog and the cat and the circumstances of their lives.
A priest I know comments about the videos of big cats being friendly toward animals that could be their prey in the wild, "That's how it was supposed to be."

"The lion will lie down with the lamb." Now that could vary depending on how hungry the lion is.
I'm not surprised they get used to each other, just by how much they care about each other.

That's so cool that Johnny and Callie have become so attached. And why wouldn't they? They have to like you: you feed them. But you can't understand their language. I'll bet they yak together all the time, in that eye-looking telepathic way.

Hi Gracie! Good to have you drop in, we've missed you.
And yes, this story of Callie joining our family had been an adventure that worked out real well.

You could tell us stories of your beloved dog, Gracie. ^=^
Somewhere in K's posts is her description of the family walks which include both Callie and Johnny the Terrorist Cat. Delightful.
Jane, has the hound-beaglish dog learned to walk on a leash?

You're right, gk, lots of posts about our pets, including our beagle.
Also the post about the teen-age patient who knows I have everything one could want in life because I travel for work and I own a beagle.
